Social evolution
As a conception of social change, social evolution has characteristically assumed certain answers toward certain questions within the general domain of dynamics. It has been oriented toward a particular unit of study, a certain kind of analogy or model, a distinctive method, a particular notion of rate and magnitude of change, a certain kind of directionality, along with particular features associated with the causal mechanisms or modus operandi of change4 (see Scheme III, F, 2).
